Life & witness
Saint and Righteous Anna is remembered in Orthodox tradition together with her husband Joachim as the parents of the Mother of God. Their long period of childlessness is presented in the Church’s tradition as a time of perseverance in prayer and trust in God. The birth of Mary is therefore understood not simply as family history, but as part of the preparation for the Incarnation of Christ.
The Church commemorates Anna on several occasions in the liturgical year. Her Dormition is kept on July 25, and she is also remembered with Joachim shortly after the feast of the Nativity of the Theotokos. For Orthodox Curaçao, her name has an additional local resonance through St. Anna Bay and the Community of Saint Anna.
