What is the Neocatechumenal Way?

EXPLANATION & CONTEXT

What is the Neocatechumenal Way?

The Neocatechumenal Way is a Roman Catholic path of Christian initiation and faith formationIt originated in 1964 in Madrid around Kiko Argüello and Carmen Hernández and developed as catechesis in small communities within Roman Catholic parishes.

What is it about?

The Way places a strong emphasis on the Word of God, liturgy, and community and aims to help people rediscover or deepen their Christian faith.

Is this orthodox?

No. The Neocatechumenal Way belongs to the Roman Catholic Church. Orthodox Curaçao is not part of it, and our worship services, sacraments, and church leadership follow the Orthodox tradition.

Why do we mention it?

In the space where our community gathers, there are monumental Christian representations that show a kinship in visual language with art used within the Neocatechumenal Way. We mention this only to explain the artistic and catechetical context.

Images as catechesis

Christian images can make Biblical stories visible. For Orthodox Curaçao, the own Orthodox teaching, liturgy, and iconographic tradition remain guiding.
