The history of our church

HISTORY OF OUR COMMUNITY

St Anne Orthodox Church in Willemstad, Curaçao

Orthodox Curaçao is a young and growing Orthodox community. Saint Anna has a special local resonance because Willemstad developed around Saint Anna Bay.

From first contacts to ecclesiastical approval

Brother Macarius helped bring the initiative on Curaçao to the attention of the Church through personal contact with the Metropolitan. In 2025 the initiative received ecclesiastical approval by decree. Since then the first steps have become more concrete and services and gatherings have taken place.

Saint Anna Bay and Saint Anna

Saint Anna Bay and Saint Anna

Willemstad grew around Saint Anna Bay, the natural entrance to the Schottegat. For a young Orthodox community seeking to grow under the protection of Saint Anna, this old Curaçao place-name also carries a spiritual meaning.

This does not mean that an Orthodox parish has stood here for centuries. Rather, a new Orthodox presence seeks respectfully to become part of Curaçao’s history and to pray, learn and serve here.

The Transfiguration as catechesis in images

The space contains a large, Byzantine-inspired depiction of the Transfiguration of Christ. This visual language reflects an ancient Christian approach to catechesis: the faith is not explained only with words, but is also made visible through images, gestures, Scripture and prayer.

The style is related to monumental works used within the Neocatechumenal Way. Orthodox Curaçao is not part of the Neocatechumenal Way; we mention it here only to explain the artistic and catechetical context of the space.
